Bringing the Outside In

Desert sunsets are very saturated, especially in the reds due to the dry, dusty atmosphere filtering the light. The relationship between the landscape and the sun became a core idea of the hypothetical rebrand of the Palm Springs Museum of Art. As an expression of this idea, I created a scale model of a multimedia spatial experience called Sunwall. I sought to capture the sky and turn it into an experience of pure color and sound, bringing it into the gallery space to illuminate a curved 80ft. wide wall. Using a weather API as a date source, the visuals projected on the wall are driven by time of day, temperature and humidity, while the audio experience is driven by windspeed.

A Light Story

My workstation sits in the corner of my studio with a nice view of the sky pouring through two large windows. I woke up early one morning and throughout the day I watched the sky evolve. These observations of how the colors moved and transformed throughout the day became a script to visualize what would happen on the Sunwall.

Sunwall

The entirety of the sky was shrunk down to a 2 ft. paper model. To create atmospherics, I used hot water and dry ice to create clouds of water vapor that rose through holes in the floor.

A beautiful view

The result was a beautiful view, reminiscent of the kind seen out of an airplane or over an enormous lake on a misty morning.
